Sicily the largest island in the Mediterranean and home to Europe's most active volcano Mt. Etna. Originally, Sicily was founded by the Greeks though over the centuries it has been invaded by the Romans, Turks, Normans and just about every major European and North African colony because of its strategic position between Africa and Europe. Because of Sicily's unique multi-cultrual history, many scholars consider Sicily to be one of the most culturaly diverse islands on the planet.
Today, Sicly is renowned throughout the world for its incredible food, wine, culture, architecture, fashion and stunning landscapes. With so many incredible sites, cities, towns and coastal villages in Sicily, it's impossible to see all of the island in a week, never mind enjoy it. From the north to the south each region on the island varies considerably in terms of cuisine, language, architecture and cultural influence. The south of the islans was strongly influenced by tje Arabic, Turkish and Greek cultures while the north has long standing traditions with the French, Austrians, German and Swiss. There are no shortage of sites to visit in Sicily, considering there are more UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE sites here than in any other region in Europe. These sites include the Greco-Roman theathre at Taormina, the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento, the archeological park at Siracusa, Selinunte archeological park and one of the most incredible set of Greek ruins located on the water in Europe.
Sicily is without a doubt steeped in history, but today it is one of Italy's most vibrant souther regions. Each year, the island welcomes visitors from all over the world and yet, most who come here don't stay long enough or try to do too much during a very short time.
