Castelmola is a picturesque hilltop village in the Province of Messina that attracts many visitors. Placed on a rock right above Taormina, the town is actually included in the circuit of the most beautiful villages in Italy, the Borghi Più Belli d’Italia.
Famous for its panoramic views, winding streets, a castle and other historical buildings, Castelmola has ancient origins dating back to the Greek period. It used to be Taormina’s acropolis (with the name of Mylai), probably because of its position, which was higher than the surrounding villages. For this reason, the histories of these two places have always been entwined.
The actual name of Castelmola derives from the Norman castle dominating the town center and from the shape of the rock on which it stands, which vaguely resembles a millstone (‘mola’).
The town shows important traces of a past rich in art, history and traditions, which are still able to fascinate. Its historic center is quite charming due to its perfectly preserved medieval urban layout, which is made up of picturesque narrow streets, small squares and ancient churches.
The historical heritage of Castelmola, coupled with its wonderful views, provides unique experiences for travelers, especially for those who want to explore the authentic Sicilian culture away from big crowds.
From its geographical position, the town offers stunning views of Mount Etna, Taormina, the Bay of Giardini Naxos, and the Strait of Messina.
Moreover, while visiting Castelmola, it is also possible to taste a wide range of typical dishes and renewed local wines.
