Aeolian Islands

The Aeolian Islands are a volcanic archipelago of islands just off the North Coast of Sicily, in the Tyrrhenian Sea and were declared a UNESCO world heritage site  UNESCO in 2000 for "an outstanding record of volcanic island-building and destruction, and ongoing volcanic phenomena".  They are named after the demigod of the winds Aeolus, the islands' inhabitants are known as Aeolians (Italian: Eoliani).  

The area is now considered both a national park in Italy and a Unesco world heritage site, drawing over 200,000 visitors annually.  The islands are covered with vineyards and knows for some of the finest sea-food in the Mediterranean.
