Mt. Etna Sicily with SicilyVisit Guided Full Day Tours

Mt. Etna

Mt. Etna is Europe's largest active volcano, located on the island of Sicily.  With an impressive height of 3350 meters above sea-level and constant eruptions, it is nearly impossible to ignore Mt. Etna when visiting Sicily.

Moreover, due to its notoriety, scientific importance, cultural and educational value, Mt. Etna is part of the World Heritage List of UNESCO.

The territory of the volcano is characterized by different morphological aspects depending on the altitude, while its volcanic soil influences the quality of many agricultural products, such as grapes and olives.

Cultivated up to 1000 meters above sea level and highly urbanized on its east and south sides, it appears much wilder and barren on its western side. The north side of Mt. Etna is slightly urbanized, but it has an unspoiled aspect with the predominance of woods. The east side is characterized by the gloomy aspect of the Valle del Bove, which is an old volcanic caldera.

Mt. Etna is a place rich of history and legends. According to Greek mythology, for example, the volcano housed the forge of Hephaestus, the God of fire and metallurgy. Many other mythological characters are connected to the volcano, like Ulysses in the Odyssey.

For those interested in good food, excursions and sport activities, Mt. Etna is the ideal place. On its slopes it is possible to make different excursions in the midst of nature or to practice outdoor sports such as skiing, hiking, and canyoning.

The atmosphere of this place is unique. In all seasons, it is possible to enjoy breathtaking views of different parts of Sicily, such as Catania, Taormina and even the Aeolian Island when climatic conditions allow it.
