The picturesque town of Agira is located in the Province of Enna, which is one of the highest elevated areas in Italy. Perched at 650 meters above the sea, Agira sits on the slope of mount Teja, near the Pozzillo artificial lake and other natural reserves like the Riserva di Piano della Corte.

The origins of this town date back about 30 000 years ago. Agira stands on the site of the ancient Sicel city of Agyrion, which was colonized by the Greeks in 339 B.C.. Even if not much is left of their habitation, Agyrion has been mentioned several times as a flourishing city by Greek and Roman philosophers like Diodoro and Cicero. In addition, through the years this town has been influenced also by the presence of other civilizations, such as the Arabs and the Normans.   

Due to its historical background, this town is characterized by the presence of various worth visiting places and ancient churches, most of which contain collections of art works. Those fascinating sites include the Duomo of Agira (also known as the “Abbazia di San Filippo d’Agira”), the Castle of Agira (a castle built before the Greek occupation), the Norman “Chiesa Madre” (Mother Church) dedicated to Santa Maria Maggiore, and urban traces of the Arab civilization.

Moreover, Agira has a delicious cuisine tradition, local wine production and typical dishes like the so called “cassatelle” (a dessert made up with chocolate and/or almond).
